I have found the informative emails, with links to research papers and so on, extremely useful since studying for the respiratory diploma 3 years ago. I have also attended study days organised by the network; always with interesting speakers, and met likeminded colleagues at these events with whom I have been able to exchange ideas and therefore improve my practice. In turn I have recommended the network to 2 of my colleagues who have recently completed the respiratory diploma. I have also found Melissa and Sarah to be supportive themselves and are easily contactable, always replying promptly.
Attending the educational meetings has changed my practice when reviewing respiratory patients. Expert speakers have provided practical guidance to improve patient care and outcomes. An example would be Leeds respiratory consultants discussing management of patients with bronchiectasis and improved inhaler prescribing using an evidence based algorithm for COPD patients.
The Network has been pivotal to me regaining my "Mojo" in a fast moving and challenging NHS. Working hard to see higher and higher volumes of patients, time and resources for professional have been scarce in recent years. Enter Leeds Respiratory Network, with an exciting programme of events and educational opportunities for those working in respiratory services (with practical help of how to access these!). For example, I was able to attend the PCRS-UK Annual Conference with their support, which I would not have been able to do so otherwise. It was the only event I had seen that was at my level of interest (specialist nurse) and as a result I have been able to continue to make changes to practice and it has renewed my enthusiasm for the speciality. It was a fantastic opportunity to network with other health care professionals and find out how other teams are dealing with the challenges facing us all. I will be back this year! Another very useful aspect of the Network is the regular emails that we receive. They round up current literature, research, guidelines and debate in the speciality, offering a gloriously simple way to keep on top of the latest developments and thinking in the world of respiratory healthcare
The Leeds Respiratory Network has been really useful in enabling the British Lung Foundation to develop a network of healthcare professionals in the area. We have seen an increase in the number of people joining BLF Professionals, which helps us to communicate directly with people who have an interest in respiratory conditions. Mel and Sarah are very supportive of the British Lung Foundation and share BLF news with the Network. I also have an opportunity to attend events to inform Network members about BLF resources that can help them and their patients. I think this will be particularly useful as we develop our Integrated Breathe Easy support groups and exercise opportunities (BLF Active) across Leeds over the next two years.
The Leeds Respiratory network has been invaluable for meeting and keeping in touch with colleagues, organising educational meetings and receiving the emails with topical information and updates. Keep up the excellent work!
I have been a member of the Leeds Respiratory Network for a number of years and have found it invaluable for signposting to local, regional and national events and key documents. Patient facing clinicians can often feel isolated, with minimal contact with their peers, so the support the network offers to them is fantastic. Primary care respiratory clinicians face the difficult task of keeping abreast of the constant change in guidance and treatment options, so it’s great that the network can offer impartial, specialist advice to the wider population who want to provide the best care for their patients. The network has also contributed to the development of local documents and policies to support the implementation of national guidance and promote best practice across the Leeds area.
I really appreciated being able to spend some time with Sarah whilst I was completing the Pharmacist Independent Prescribing course and feel reassured to know that if I need any advice on respiratory issues in the future, the Leeds Respiratory Network are so approachable and willing to help!
As a practice nurse I was responsible for performing annual reviews on patients with asthma and COPD. Although I had passed my respiratory diploma, I still felt my knowledge was very limited. I was delighted when Melissa and Sarah set up Leeds Respiratory Network as finally I had access to good quality teaching sessions from enthusiastic respiratory experts. Being able to attend evening meetings and ask questions relating to my personal practice was invaluable - especially as I had felt increasingly vulnerable, knowing I was being regarded as a 'specialist' without having the experience to justify it! I attended almost every meeting and was also funded through the network to attend the PCRS national conference which was a fabulous opportunity to meet other medical colleagues and exchange ideas. As a direct result of Melissa and Sarah's efforts my confidence in my practice increased dramatically and (hopefully) my patients benefited.
